A blast-resistant building (BRB) is a structure designed to withstand the impact of explosions, such as bomb blasts or other high-energy events. These buildings are built with specialized materials and construction techniques that absorb, deflect, or disperse explosive energy. Commonly used in high-risk areas like industrial zones, disaster preparedness sites, conflict zones, and other critical infrastructure, BRBs also play a key role in industries such as chemical plants and oil refineries where explosions or fires are a major hazard. Their primary goal is to protect occupants and minimize damage, enhancing the safety and security of both the building and its surroundings.
BRBs are rated in two ways—the amount of pressure they can withstand from an explosion and the response level. The amount of pressure in pounds per square inch (PSI) that the building can withstand is given a number rating. The higher the rating, the more resistant the building is to blasts. The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) establishes response level ratings based on the predicted amount of repair that a structure would need after an explosion. The response level ratings are low, medium and high. With low meaning an explosion would do very little damage and require a low response and high meaning the building is predicted to sustain substantial damage in an explosion.
Response levels are defined by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) as Low, Medium, and High. This correlates to the level of damage to expect to the building after a blast or explosion. A Medium Response will require significant repairs after a blast due to widespread building damage. The building should not be used until the repairs are made. A Low Response means the building may have little damage after an event, but can still be used. Minor repairs from damage may be needed but the building can be used in the meantime. Buildings can be engineered to withstand a great deal of pressure and force from an event, but explosions are powerful events. Blast proof implies that there would be no damage after an event which would be nearly impossible. Because of this, blast-resistant is the term used industry-wide.
